| Back to "Tales" Contents Back to Home C H R I S T M A S T A L E As every day, the dog worked hardly all day long, without respite, always on the qui vive, always on the move, always willing to lend a sympathetic ear to everybody. As every day, he gave fully of himself, freely, unfailingly, always ready to provide to the needs of any situation, forgetting his own needs. As every day, he felt weary and tired while the day was drawing to an end, worn out by this hard labour to which he was giving his body and soul. As every day, he had given all of himself to serve his master. As every day, his master gave him nothing but a few unpleasant words while throwing his mash, and his constantly repeated orders. As every day, he didn't take offence at that, and he didn't wait anything else from his master. As every day, after his work, he saw to his business, running free inside the enclosure. As every day, he went off and paid the well a visit to get his mind at rest. But that evening was the Christmas night, and the stars seemed to call him. So that evening, he started to pray for his master, so his heart would be moved one day. So that evening, he arrived to the well with a lot of love for his master, so this love could one day open his heart. So that evening ... As every day, he bent over the well and searched his reflection. But that evening, he discovered in the heart of his image a large ball full of light. This light was dancing like the flame of a candle. This light was coming from the heart of the Earth and was going up to him through the water. And joy overflowed inside of him. He wanted immediately to thank his benefactor, and questioned : "Who put this light there ?" Then a gentle and glowing voice came down from the Sky to surround him with its benevolence : "I did !"
