| Fur/skin problem of Kristàlyos : As it can be seen on the photos, when he was 3 months old, the fur was already bad : especially on the belly, and the lower part of the flanks, the hair was thin, the skin could be been ; and on the body, the hair was flat, poor, less thin than on the belly, however too thin ; I didn't know the Mudi breed, and in June the pup could be muddling, so I didn't realize that in fact there was a problem - I didn't know that the hair would have had to be bushy, thick, etc. So I didn't react first. But the hair was thinner and thinner and then missing, and the skin turned more or less reddish. I took him to the vet, who diagnosed mange. The treatment was long and harsh, and during several months the hair had been thin or still missing. Then, at last, Kristàlyos showed a good enough coat. I considered that mange was due to parasites, so I didn't think any more about this when I wanted to get a litter from him. But when some of his sons (there was no bitch in my Mudi litter) began to show the first signs of mange, I began to wonder whether it could be in relation with their father's mange ; I wondered if Kristàlyos was still wearing some mange parasites, and could have "given" some to the pups. Of course I reacted quickly, and none of the pups had shown a very bad coat. Then the pups turned into adult dogs without any health problem, and with thick coat, so when I got severe health problems, I searched new owners for them all without remembering that they got mange : for me, it was a past thing. I didn't get news of them after the first weeks. But a few years later, I was working about hereditary diseases in the Mudi breed, and I bought a book about hereditary diseases in dogs ("Génétique et sélection chez le Chien" Pr Bernard Denis) and I discovered the key of the problem. I read in this book that mange in young dogs is due to immune deficiency ; in fact, these parasites (Demodex Canis) are living on a lot of dogs without inducing any mange ; only when the body is weaker than normal, the mange can appear ; but when it appears in pups or young dogs, that means that such pups have got immune deficiency, and this immune deficiency is hereditary ; that explained why some sons got mange and some others didn't, although all the pups were still sleeping one against the others : some had got immune deficiency, some hadn't ; and of course, they got immune deficiency because they inherited this from Kristàlyos (or : at least from Kristàlyos). As for Kristàlyos, he showed several times bad or even very bad coat, sometimes good coat, and generally rather poor coat, but I'm not sure that this later coat problems were due to immune deficiency, it was no more mange. Nonetheless, I think that immune deficiency is a severe problem and that pups who show mange ought to be eliminated from breeding (and the blamed parent too). Owing to my ignorance (and no vet had told me that parasites weren't the only responsible thing of mange), Kristàlyos had got offspring, but luckily, none of his sons had been used in breeding. |
